Routine induction of general anaesthesia

Educational use only. Not clinically reviewed

42-year-old woman for Laparoscopic cholecystectomy. About 12 simulated minutes.

What you will practise

  • Preoxygenate before inducing, and explain what it buys you.
  • Wait for the effect site rather than the syringe: recognise that the last dose has not yet fully acted.
  • Recognise vasodilatory hypotension after induction and treat the mechanism.
  • Establish ventilation before saturation falls.
  • Give enough opioid that incision does not provoke a haemodynamic response.
